Scripture often teaches by picture. Not because God is vague, but because the human soul learns slowly and deeply through metaphor.
“My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass.” Deuteronomy 32:2
God’s still small voice comes to us like delicate dew forming in the morning. Dew comes quietly, gradually, and without announcement. We cannot ‘make it happen’, we can only humbly submit to it and receive it.
Dew only forms when the conditions are right. In simple terms, dew appears when the night air and the surface cool enough that the existent latent moisture, condenses.
Typical Conditions for dew formation (and their spiritual parallels):
TEMPERATURE – Cooling toward the dew point (a lowering of “heat”)
Dew forms as the surface temperature drops. Condensation occurs at the ‘dew point temperature’. Likewise, God’s voice is often missed when our inner world is overheated—by hurry, strong emotion, argument, anxiety, or self-thought. Hearing frequently begins when the heart “cools”: when we stop striving, stop performing.
OPENNESS – Clear skies and openness (less covering, more exposure)
Dew formation is helped by an open sky, where the ground can release heat freely. Spiritually, “clear skies” speaks to openness: confession, sincerity, vulnerability, removing layers of pretence. Leaving the dreaded fields of denial and lies we like believing. The soul that is uncovered, yes stark naked, before God, presents a surface where Divine Dew can settle.
STILLNESS – Calm air / low wind (stillness rather than turbulence)
Wind disrupts dew formation by mixing warmer air and preventing steady cooling. In the same way, constant inner whirling “wind”—noise, distractions, compulsive phone checking, endless input—keeps the soul mixed and restless … with many things held in a suspended and anxious state. A purposeful quietening does not earn revelation; it simply aids reception. It’s about focusing, centering, being transfixed by the beauty of Christ.
HUMIDITY – Sufficient humidity (rich deposits of memorized Scripture)
Dew formation requires moisture in the air. Spiritually, this is akin to ‘Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly’ Col 3 … the water of the word (logos). Dry air is akin to having a drought of the word of Christ. Having the written word filling your brain and heart is like moist air filling your inner soul space … ripe for condensation!
PATIENCE – Time (unhurried formation)
Dew commonly forms over hours, not minutes. This is a rebuke to our instant habits. God’s voice is not always a shout; often it is a steady condensation of truth over time—Scripture remembered, conviction deepening, a gentle clarity that “settles” rather than strikes.
Hearing God’s voice may be mysterious, but it is not complicated. No mystical tricks required to hear our Creator. It’s even easy, when the rights conditions are met. God’s voice comes like dew, “soft” yet firm—like dew: light on the skin, but the next minute you know, the ground is soaked!
